“I understand the difference between the (gps) and (gps+cellular) models. If I have AT&T as my carrier, do I have to buy the (AT&T) specific model, or can I buy the “universal” (gps+cellular) model, and activate with AT&T later?”

Yes, I bought my Apple Watch 4 (with cellular) from Best Buy. I called my carrier, which is Verizon. It cost $30 to activate, and am charged $10 per month for this device.

The watch is universal and may be activated with either carrier. After receiving your watch, you contact your cellphone provider (whenever you want to have it active) and have the watch added to your plan and it is then activated. Very easy.
