• You can answer your phone and get texts with just GPS also, but your phone needs to be close. If you want to use your watch as a stand-alone piece then you’d want cellular. You also pay an additional monthly fee for cellular.

• With the cellular Apple Watch you don’t need your phone. You can receive messages and phone calls without needing your phone.
