If you get the GPS version, sadly no. You have to have your phone on you in order to receive phone related notifications. Some things can still be used as a smart watch though.

My watch is added to AT&T. If I leave my watch at home, I can still send and receive call and texts. My watch will also let me know if I left my phone behind before I get too far from the last location of my phone but it will work independently of the phone. However, I added it to my account to activate this feature for a very minimum fee. Check your carrier for more info.

I’ve left my phone in the car while shopping and it will pick up xfinity Wi-Fi’s and be connected and able to receive iMessages and email and use Apple Pay. Hope it helps
