The GPS and Cellular version requires an additional monthly charge to enable cellular on the watch for calls texts and internet when separated from the phone. . See paragraph from apple below. This allows use for phone calls and texts and streaming audio to earbuds etc without carrying your iPhone. Check with your current iPhone cell carrier for an Apple Watch plan. Not every cell company can offer it because they need to be setup for the calls to work on both phone & watch. There are two ways to get cellular coverage. 1) add it to an existing service plan from qualified cell carriers - and use the watch in conjunction with that phone receiving calls with that main number. Leave your phone behind for a jog - and you will still get calls and texts from the primary iPhone number. 2) Add watch as a family member - and you can use it separately from an iPhone. Calls won't get directed from the phone to the watch because it's assume there is no phone to pair. The watch then gets it's own number and receives calls this way. This is suited more for kids that don't have a iphone. Truphone offers this family coverage in the US for $9.99 a month. And there may be others. The GPS only apple watch doesn't have cellular - so it just functions as a normal Apple Watch and requires the phone to be with you to do anything that requires the internet or take calls. But the up side is if you don't care about using the watch separate from the phone - then save the monthly charges - and the watch is less expensive. Or to future proof your decision - buy the GPS Cellular version - and activate the cell plan down the road. from apple website: With Apple Watch with cellular and a cellular connection to the same carrier used by your iPhone, you can make calls, reply to messages, use Walkie-Talkie, stream music and podcasts, receive notifications, and more, even when you don’t have your iPhone or a Wi-Fi connection. Note: Cellular service not available in all areas or with all carriers."
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The only difference is that GPS + Cellular allows you to add your apple watch as a line with your cellular provider, meaning you can use the watch alone even if you don't have your phone near by.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I understand. You can buy the cellular one and pay the additional $100 BUT your carrier with charge a start up charge $35 plus a monthy fee, just like adding a phone, but less cost of course. The cellular option would be good if you ever don't have your phone nearby. For example if you like to hike, run or bike or walk, you don't' need your phone nearby if you're paying for cellular service. Or if you're in another state on vacay and forget your phone and lock yourself out or get lost, your watch will work like your phone without your phone nearby. I bought the one with cellular, but when pairing it to my phone, I opted NOT to connect the cellular. Therefore, no activation or monthly fees. IF i ever need it, then I can activate it.
