If you get cellular service on your watch set up you can leave phone at home. You phone is necessary to set up watch and you can customize your screens to what is important for you. I would definitely get the bigger screen if older to see your emails. I voice text people back and it is easier then typing on the keyboard.

I happen to have an older Apple iPhone, but I did upgrade to accommodate the watch. Best Buy was very helpful setting up the iwatch but didn’t say that I needed a special charger adapter.
