• No it doesn’t require any cellular equipment to operate within U.S.

• The Ultra has a dual band gps (over all previous generations) and all Ultras are cellular. So this can operate independent of an iPhone. I know for sure it runs Apple Maps, and I’m certain there are other apps for the watch that will have topographical maps for use in the back country.
