Why does one answer say no subscription needed, and another say if you don’t subscribe the cameras do not work? 
Bottom line here: is there short term storage in the cloud, without a subscription? null

There is no subscription needed to monitor the cameras but you need a subscription in order to cloud save and review past recorded moments. These cameras do NOT have an SD card slot so there is NO way to save recorded moments yourself without the cloud storage. Hope this helps!

A subscription is not required for you to install your cameras and access the camera's live view, amongst other features. If cloud storage is needed, an Arlo subscription is required. With an Arlo Secure subscription, you will have access to up to 60 Days of cloud storage.
