You can turn it on. It can turn on with motion giving you night vision video in color. You can turn it off. You have options for how you want the cameras to function. Also once you purchase one camera there are many ways to personalize a system of 1 or more cameras. I own the essential doorbell and two essential spotlight cameras. Thoroughly pleased. Also the audio is great. I purchased these because we had an intruder. Best feature besides great picture resolution is the audio. One last thing. You can decide to link to police

yes you can actually turn this off in the arlo app by the way you would go to the flashlight and just shut it off from there or you can just keep the camera off that works also by the way.
