No you can set it up from the app to work with your local network. So it will be just another device on the wireless network. The home base makes it easier by consolidating all the cameras through one connection to the internet.

Arlo SmartHub or base station is optional to use the Arlo Essential Spotlight camera. You can use an existing WiFi router to connect the Arlo Video Doorbell directly to 2.4GHz WiFi. If you want to connect your Arlo Video Doorbell to a SmartHub or base station, you can connect it to a VMB5000, VM4540, VMB4500, VMB4000 SmartHub or base station. ^RM
