Light does help but they work fine in night vision mode.

Imagine looking into the dark with a flashlight, that is about how far the camera can see (if not better). A light shining from behind the camera will add color to night shots and give you more viewing area. A light pointing at the camera will make viewing difficult just like looking into oncoming car lights while driving.
