“Can the camera be powered "only" by 120 volts AC without any battery installed in it, or is it only possible for the optional outdoor adapter to be used to "continuously charge" the camera battery which would still need to be replaced at some point?”

Right Dave, but the battery lasts for 2 years so the wireless works great.
