The cameras do run on batteries and can go months between needing to be charged. Be aware that the camera does communicate via WiFi to the Arlo Base Station so the camera and base station need to be close enough to each other that the WiFi signal can be sent and received. I have 1 camera that is about 50 feet and 3 walls away from the base station and it still works fine.
