I did not need a base station to install Pro 4 cameras and the wired video doorbell. If you go to Arlo's site you can compare cameras and see which ones you can do with just wifi.

Arlo Pro 4 camera can connect directly to your router' wifi network, hence a base station optional. This camera has up to 2K video resolution while the Arlo Ultra camera can record up to 4K quality but can only work with a SmartHub. When they are connected to a SmartHub they can utilize the local storage feature by following the steps here : https://kb.arlo.com/1146857/. ^RM
