My home internet service is through my cable which offers Wi_fi, and my cell will pickup the cameras as long as I have a Wi-Fi connection while I'm away. So, is it "necessary"? Well, it seems to be the way it works, maybe I'm wrong considering my service already has Wi-Fi?
