(1) Is the XT9 for optical modem only?
(2) If so, is there a version for use with a non-optical modem?
(3) Why does it need both internal and external modems? null

I have no idea why they have not corrected this.  It works with non-optical modems.  Only.

This router should work with both optical and non-optical models.
