Yes it automatically places the first line on hold while you connect in the other line for conferencing. But hanging up either line when done with it, while still on other line, remains a mystery to me. My last phone hung up the other line immediately when you switched away from it. This one defaults to keeping it on hold. I'm sure there is probably a way to relinquish the line, but I have not found it by doing the things I'd expect to work.
