Yes, it takes a SIM card, but I can't tell if i the device is locked or whether you can use a different SIM card. The card slot is located under the battery. It is a larger SIM, so if you have an iPhone or device with a nanoSIM, you will need an adapter. Note the range is a bit limited, so if you were planning to use this over a large area, it might not work well. After about 20-30 feet you lose the signal.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There are other companies that offer unlimited ATT data plans and can provide you a sim card. I'm paying $60/month for unlimited, non-throttled, data with one of these companies. This unit requires a sim card to function. You can buy the micro sim card anywhere, but you have to have a data plan. Check out OTR Mobile, AG Mobile, NetBuddy and others. They all offer ATT data plans that will work with this unit. Make sure whatever data plan you have gives you enough data for your needs. I think the ATT outside hotspot is only good for 10 gigs/month before they shut you down or charge you extra.
