• The cable on the back side is for power assist. A multi port like this needs to use additional power to function. But it is easy to use and I go from device to device flawlessly on my computer, which is what I use it for.

• It has ports on only one side, for USB 2.0s. Yes, my thumb drives work with this hub. Don't know if 3.0 USBs will work with this hub.
