In order to have the protection via the membership yes the yearly fee must be paid up front. You can cover unlimited devices with your plan, plus you get back up protection against damage to any item you buy in store while membership is active. To me, $199 a year is well worth their time and effort when diagnosing and repairing what ails your electronics...
