Subscription is optional 
You can use local storage if you insert a usb drive into the sync module. It will save the videos on the drive and you can see the videos on the app on your phone. It does work with Alexa

You have to sign up with blink if you want to record . It will work without a blink subscription but you can't record any footage which in my view is pointless . Most people buy a surveillance camera to be able to record footage of things that happen bad around the place they put the camera. It's very inexpensive for the blink subscription and definitely worth the money.
