It works without a subscription but you need to purchase a USB stick for storage and format and insert it into the hub that controls these cameras.

It also comes with a hub where you can format and insert a USB stick that saves all your videos and snapshots taken. It has to be put in a computer to view and can also be deleted from the computer. The subscription for three cameras or more is $10 per month. Just depends on what you prefer.
