No, it's optional; you can use it without a wire, but a subscription is required after the free trial. It's recommended for students and small spaces. Hope I answered it, and I would definitely look into better solid options.

For the best battery life it's recommended to use the Blink Video Doorbell with a Blink Sync module. When on battery and connected via WiFi the doorbell will only be accessible when it has recently been interacted with or detected motion, so if you'd like to be able to access the live view whenever you like hard wired or connected via Sync Module is the way to go!
