Hi Mary, The washer and dryer are designed in Germany and unfortunately they kept the higher voltage for it for the North America market. The washer is designed to plug into the dryer directly, and then the dryer plugs into the 220V wall outlet designed for it. So if you only wanted a washer, it would mean some electrical work in your home to accommodate the higher voltage requirement , so not ideal.
