This model of head of only have one level of noise cancelling, that I'm aware of. On or off. Bose claims that you can still listen to music when it's turned off. I'm going to disagree with them on this. The noise cancellation is powered by a battery. So it's active versus passive like a lot of other similar NC head phones. This makes a rather huge difference. BUT, I believe the speakers in the headphones are also powered. Reason being that if you turn the noise cancelling off two things happen. The sound goes out for a couple of seconds entirely and when it comes back on the quality of the listening is impacted HUGELY (and negatively). Without noise cancelling engaged, the quality of music is actually worse than a set of $10 ear buds. Turn it on and the sound goes out for a second or two, but when it comes back on, the whole world of listening changes dramatically.
