Yes, you can pair with an earlier model or the same model, but they must be in separate rooms to work.

Both the current Zeppelin and the previous generation (Zeppelin Wireless) use Apple Airplay Technology. However, the current Zeppelin uses Airplay 2 and older Zeppelin Wireless uses the original Airplay. While Airplay 2 is compatible with Airplay, the opposite is not true. Only Airplay 2 supports multi-room, which allows you to send music to multiple Airplay 2 devices at the same time. This was not a feature of Apple's original Airplay technology. So the answer is that you can use two current Zeppelin as multi-room devices using Airplay 2 (or the Formation technology built into current Zeppelin) but you cannot use an older Zeppelin Wireless and new Zeppelin in a multi-room configuration.
