Yes you do need both magnets. My iPhone is heavy and with both magnets it doesn’t move.

I've been disappointed with the magnet that attaches to the bracket. One has already fell off and is useless. I'm now waiting on the spare magnet to fall off. I shouldn't have to be worried about the bracket becoming useless for the amount I paid

The MagnetXT mount does require the metal plate to be attached to your device in order to work, because the magnet on the mount needs to line up with the metal plate to stay in place.
