No proof but I believe it is sucking heat/steam out of the microwave so the Smart IQ technology works on subsequent use. Smart IQ as far as I can tell (and this is not defined in the book which is very annoying) senses the humidity/air temperature inside the box while cooking. I assume the fan is sucking out heat/moisture so it's ready to go should you subsequently choose a cooking cycle requiring Smart IQ.
