• You don’t need a laptop. I set mine up on my iPad and it works great

• Yes, you will have to install the Printer Driver on your laptop. Many of the features of your Brother machine's printer are only available if you're using the Brother Original printer driver (Windows) or the Brother CUPS printer driver (Macintosh). It's easy to install a generic or third-party driver and miss out on your machine's full functionality.
