“When I purchased my printer a year ago I thought I would get free ink cartridges? How does that work. I have model MFC-j995DW.”

The printer should have come with cartridges. After that, they cost money. It feels as if they are as expensive as normal ink (ugh, super-expensive), but one tank lasts a lot longer.

As for to begin with, depending on where you purchased (I’m assuming Best Buy) it should say if it comes with 1 year or 2 years worth of ink. Most come with 1 year. However it’s depending on where you buy it and the price. The price is lower typically for less ink.
