Yes, you can take a picture of the moon -- however if you do shoot in RAW, you have the capability of editing some of the noise out as you zoom in really close to the moon. This lens is bad with zooming into subjects pretty close, and it creates a really bad quality image. If you shoot in manual, the settings I would recommend is 0"4-5" and aperture at f/7 and leave your ISO at 1600. I get some decent results, but with a little bit of editing, it all works out in the end.
