Lol, I wondered the same thing, I had to download the manual to figure it out. Its used if you want to load legal size paper in the drawer, the drawer wouldn't go all the way in with 14'' paper so that thing clips onto the part of the drawer that would be left sticking out as a dust cover. It looks pretty awful so I'm glad that I don't need to use legal sized paper on the regular.
