Yes you can. However you cannont print anything in color.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I have never tried to use only black cartridges. You may want to send a request to Canon to see if they can help you out. Another option is to use cartridges with less ink. There are numbers 245 and 246. They have less ink and are less expensive than the XL variety. You could also use numbers 243 and 244. They also have less ink. However, a single package with these two items is about $29.00.
