ALL printers need both black & color ink cartridges in place, even if you only want to print in B&W.

No. This printer will require you to have all colors installed. I have not heard of a color inkjet printer with multiple ink tanks that will allow you to do so. Only HP printers that use 2 cartridge systems will let you print black only with 1 cartridge installed. That would be printers with HP 60, 61, 901 and similar ink cartridge system printers.
