A UPS needs to always be connected to power, so you can't eliminate the power cord. Without power connected, the battery will eventually run down, as there's always a little internal power use by the circuits. A UPS is not designed to be a stand-alone source of AC power. It is solely designed to keep steady power applied to electronic devices in case of a power surge or failure. It eliminates the spikes that can damage electronic equipment, and provide a time buffer to allow shutting the device down properly to avoid any loss of data. Most UPS devices have an alarm that will continue to alert when the power is off, so it could get very annoying in your scenario. :)
