So the companies and jack up the prices of computers with more RAM already installed. Plus you can't upgrade down the line so you have to spend more money on another laptop.

Efficiency: Soldered memory can be attached almost anywhere in the laptop instead of being slotted into a specific part of it. It makes the laptop thinner by cutting back on the space that the RAM module takes up, allowing for a more compact design. Without RAM slots, laptops can also be lighter, a significant selling point for many consumers.
