The receiver can send an audio signal to your TV and to the speakers connected to the receiver simultaneously when connected via HDMI. You will have to configure both devices to have audio playback and if one or both supports HDMI CEC (some brands have their own proprietary name for control of the other via HDMI) you may have to do a bit of configuration menu setting tests to have both stay on as some TVs may sense an Audio Video receiver in the HDMI network and turn the speakers off by default.
