The ohms is the resistance from the speaker. You can put the switch to 6 ohms, but the speakers connected will only be 8 ohms. That means you will see no benefit to switching it to 6 if your speakers are 8. Not sure if it will damage the amp, but there are zero reasons to switch it to 6 ohms unless your speakers have 6 ohms of resistance.
