Is multi-player local co-op or online only? null

Both are available. Every player will need their own Switch and copy of the game. Online play will require each player to have a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Multiplayer is online only or with two switch consoles and two copies of the game. You need to play some single player to a certain point in the game on the first island to unlock the multiplayer portal.

You can only play with friends online or with 2 switch consoles.

You are able to invite up to three friends to join you, open your island up to any three players, join your friends on their island, or go to a random player’s island so long as it’s open to strangers. Note that you have to get so far into the story to unlock the teleport option (complete the first map, get your own map then finish several quests at your map, so probably 8-20 hours into the story)

Seems to be only a 1 player game

You can play together online only, so you would need a seperate system. and you can only play together on one island.

Multiplayer can be local or online(with Nintendo Online). One switch = one player. You cannot play two players with two Joycons like NES/SNES games.
