Hello Sebgat, This is Amanda from Dyson. The 2nd battery can be on the charger only, it does not need to be attached to the machine. You can have one battery charging while the other is in use! We hope this helps. Amanda Dyson Customer Support

Pull out and up on the red tab-connector that is located on the bottom of the handle of the lithium ion battery --- this will release the battery from the handle. 2.) Then pull the battery out of the socket. 3.) Now you can plug the battery into the charger -- and no the battery does Not need to be attached to the vacuum when charging. May take a little practice before you can feel the "groove" of how the battery can be "dis-attached" and "re-attached" with the handle.
