Yes, the modem is needed for your broadband connection to your ISP. You will drop only the TV service from your contract and keep the internet service with the cable company if you are happy with them or you can switch to another ISP if the cable internet is bad. You will need good Internet service for streaming and the modem is the gateway to the internet.

The eero needs an ethernet connection to the internet in order to work, then it can take care of all the other wired/wireless devices. For example, if your internet comes into your house with a coaxial or fiber cable, you'll still need a modem to translate that to an ethernet connection.
