“This worked with my old MAC with a USB port but my new MAC doesn’t have a USB port. I purchased an external drive to connect to the new computer and it doesn’t seem to work. I’ve plugged other things into the external drive and it works ... ideas?”

If you're using a newer Mac with USB-C connections, you will need an adapter that converts you from USB-A to the new USB-C. Once you have the adapter, it's smooth sailing.
