You do not need the internet, it is a standalone unit. If you have to download drivers or update drivers, you will need internet for that. But once it is setup, you do not need internet to be able to scan or save the scans to your computer.

Joel, You will need an internet connection the first time you connect it to your laptop. The software must be downloaded from Epson's website.
