“will this printer still print in black if the color cartridges are empty but left in the printer? is there an option in settings for just printing in black as i don't need color printing.”

With a laptop, you can print things in black. Don't know about a smartphone.

You can cancel your print job and select settings to temporarily print with only black ink on plain paper or an envelope if the print stops. We recommend replacing any expended color cartridges as soon as possible as this can lead to print head-related issues. Regards, Kevin - The Epson Team.
