The "filler trim" frame adds no more that 1/8" under the trim of the cooktop.

Thanks for reaching out with your great question! This trim kit can be described as a "one-piece thin, almost flat, "picture frame" (painted metal) with square corners." Think of it as being the picture frame and the new cooktop is the picture. It's meant to be used if your cutout is larger than what is needed for the new cooktop; it essentially covers the cut/rough edge in the counter opening.
