Yes, a smartphone is much preferred although it is true the screen seems pretty nice. The smarthone provides a blue tooth connection that allows you to download the data that has been tracked. And the Smartphone app is where you really get the ability to review and understand the information the fitbit has been gathering. Using the fitbit ulta without a smartphone would leave you missing out on most of the neat functionality.
