To map walking/running route need smartphone. Otherwise operates independently. Will need some device....PC, phone, tablet to sync with for long term data recording over days, weeks...

No but it will sync with watch and or tablet to show you progress and your goals, without a smart phone you only get half of what it can do.

You don't need smartphone. You can use it by itself, or use it with PC or MAC.

A smartphone is not required to use this device. You can synchronize to the dashboard on your computer, which will track all the metrics. 
A Bluetooth connection will be required to receive call/text notifications from your phone to take advantage of these features.
