No, but you would need a computer with Internet access (or a way to install fitbit's software). The HR comes with a USB-Bluetooth adapter and a USB connector to directly connect the device. You can use Fitbit's website and/or software on your computer with virtually the same features as the smartphone app.

No, you can track your information on the fitbit itself.
If you like to see more of a summary and other interesting bits of info about what you've accomplished, you can do that online from a pc or Mac. No need for a smartphone, though it's convenient.

Although beneficial, you do not need a smart phone for the Fitbit. You can go online and log into your account and see your status and history.
