according to the box it came in it does and it appears to register steps when your hand isn't moving.

What I found is that it refined my actual stride over time. It started with a stride based on my height, then refined it as I walked more and more and used GPS.

Yes to both--GPS is activated when in "run" mode. Otherwise, distance is estimated.

Supposedly it does, but it's really slow. I stopped using it because I would have to sit for what felt like forever for it to calibrate.

Overall it just counts steps, but if you chose one of the activities associated with GPS, it does use GPS. If you go on Fitbit's website, it tells you which activity selections use GPS. It does take a couple minutes to connect to GPS, but you can either start your workout (except for cycling) and it'll count steps until GPS connects or you can wait to connect then start workout.
