No you do not need your phone with you for certain features. Like playing music, you can load music to your watch and use wireless earbuds or wireless headphones. It will track your steps, distance, etc. you can use the exercise apps and features. You can use the apps on your watch. Just about anything except text messages and caller ID and notifications from your phone you need your phone nearby for that. And Bluetooth must be turned on in your phone and your watched connected to your phones Bluetooth. Hope this helps

Nope. It’s great for the fact that you can just leave your phone somewhere safe and still get all your text and calendar notifications. It does use Bluetooth though for sharing with the app. I guess I’ve never been to far from my phone now that I think about it.

No you don't have to have your phone with you. Only to set up your Versa fit bit to begin with. Otherwise, it should work just fine once you have it all set up and programmed.

Yes (mostly)— your phone has to be near you for some functions. Example: biking, walking— watch can show calories & time, but needs app opened to show real-time distance/miles. 
Also needs to be near for text/app alerts

Basic functions you can do without your phone near by— review your stats for the day, check weather, etc.
