The unit is designed to trickle water over the metal grid to make ice. If the water is really cold - ice can build up that does not slide off easily when the ice making cycle pauses to allow the ice to fall into the bin. As well if there are any minerals and water deposits on the grid - it isn't quite as slippery and ice can stick and build up. One trick many people use is to spray the grid with Pam which makes the ice slide off.
